The What Cheer? Brigade is a 20-piece brass band from Providence, RI, USA. They prove that great parties need no electricity. Since 2005, the band has been as likely to appear at community benefits as at all-night parties, playing bars, clubs, streets, libraries, cemeteries, weddings, bus stops, and playgrounds.

West Philadelphia Orchestra is a unique live ensemble whose influences range from Sun Ra to Bulgarian brass bands. They began playing Romanian ballads, Macedonian folk-dance songs, Bulgarian wedding music, and Klezmer in late 2006, and have continued expanding their repertoire of Eastern European music.

Teddy Valentine, also known by the stage name Afropanther, is a DJ, performer, and producer. Afropanther is a Pioneer Valley favorite amongst fans of all different demographics. Before Northampton, Afropanther lived in Montreal, Quebec for 3 years.

The What Cheer? Brigade is a 20-piece brass band from Providence, RI, USA. We prove that great parties need no electricity.

Since 2005, the band has been as likely to appear at community benefits as at all-night parties, playing bars, clubs, streets, libraries, cemeteries, weddings, bus stops, and playgrounds. In 2010, we joined Anchor Brain Records to re-release our second CD, We Blow, You Suck and Classy: Live in Pawtucket in 2011.

We’ve played with Blondie, Dan Deacon, Man Man, Japanther, Dengue Fever, Okkervil River, Lightning Bolt, Ninjasonik, Mika Miko, Wolf Parade, Matt and Kim, Slavic Soul Party, Javelin, Sage Francis, and Chain and the Gang. We’ve appeared at Lollapalooza, The Newport Folk Festival, Aarhus Festuge (Denmark), Sziget (Hungary), and Guca (Serbia), offering mobile moments of intense revelry.

“Thrillingly competent, with undimmable energy…an explosion of good cheer.”
-The New York Times

“They never actually took a stage, but Providence, RI’s What Cheer? dominated the Newport Folk Fest like a headliner.”
-SPIN

West Philly Orchestra
With a line-up of Philadelphia musicians whose influences range from Sun Ra to Bulgarian brass bands, West Philadelphia Orchestra is a unique live ensemble in today’s auto-tuned musical world. They began playing Romanian ballads, Macedonian folk-dance songs, Bulgarian wedding music, and Klezmer in late 2006, and have continued expanding their repertoire of Eastern European music. The band also plays original tunes which blend other sounds, like jazz and classical, together with traditional Balkan sounds. As much a community as a band, WPO’s performances are celebratory events. With blistering beats and walls of brass, they inspire audiences to hold hands, gyrate, howl, and otherwise slip the yoke of the homogenized culture industry.

“‘Zla S’dba’ is a joyful Balkan dance number that gets everyone in the room swaying. Bulgarian language skills not required; the song’s irresistibly celebratory spirit needs no translation.” – Rachel, NPR Tiny Desk Contest

“Despite a sizeable portion of the crowd likely not understanding the various languages of the southeastern Europe region, there always seems to be a supernatural synergy between them and the band.” – JUMP Philly

“– this is by far one of the most energetic acts in the city. Check them out, they host the Balkan Dance party at Underground Arts [now at Franky Bradley’s].” – Get Lucid
